18th Tans Camp - October 8, 9, 10th. Due to the surrounding fires the Camp was called off on Friday evening. A decision was made at 5:30pm that we did not want to risk being trapped if the winds and fires picked up. Both roads to the camp site were blocked. On talking to the camp manager, they had no power and water for most of the weekend. Unfortunately the camp site is booked out till Christmas. Therefore no camp will be possible this year. Next year we hope to book Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast around August 2005. The 18th Tans Camp is on again. For those who haven’t been, our camp is not just for Taekwondo students. Situated in the Gold Coast hinterland, Camp Bornhoffen is surrounded by rainforest, national parks and heaps of fresh air. Only 25% of the time is spent on actual training. The rest of the time is spent relaxing away from the city and having fun with others. There is plenty of room for families or even a parent who wishes to accompany their child to camp. Families are given a separate cabin or they may choose to mix with other families. What to bring.

Black Belt Girls kick butt
On Sunday 8th February, 5 out of 6 students attending the higher black belt grading were female. The girls graded from 2nd Dan to 4th Dan under the supervision of Grand Master Sung Sool Lee 9th Dan. The girls had an exceptional high standard and power. With temperatures over 30 degrees, the girls showed great strength and stamina. The rise in the number of females training all the way to black belt and beyond is pleasing in this day and age of assaults and domestic violence. Claudia Tan achieved the rank of 4th Dan black belt. This makes her one of the highest females in Queensland and elevates her to the level of head instructor. Only 1% of all females achieve this level in all Martial arts. Claudia has been training since 1987 and has won 2 national championships. She also watched the 2000 Olympics where another female Lauren Burns of Australia won the first gold medal in Taekwondo. Other students who grade on the day were Chrissie Bowie 3rd Dan, Petrina Stamilous & Helen King 2nd Dan, Thomas Power & Sharron Carlton 2nd Dan bo. The next dan grading will be in the later half of the year. Michael Tan 4th Dan bo, Terje Svingen 3rd Dan bo & Shane Hartmann 2nd Dan bo obtained Hapkido Dan gradings as well.
7 New Black belts. The end of 2003 saw 7 students promoted to black belt. Brandon Evans (Currumbin), David Truong & Steve Wassenaar (Buranda), and the Vedelagos - Melinda, Daniella, Nicholas and Martin from Sunnybank. All students performed exceptionally well in very hot December weather. Congratulations to all new black belts.
Korean Culture Exchange. Korean Cultural Exchange. Students from Tans Taekwondo Buranda had a welcome visit at class. 24 Korean Taekwondo students from the city of Dae Gu participated in a joint training session. The Korean students ranging from 8 to 13 years were welcome with open arms by the local students from Buranda. After the joint session, the students exchanged gifts and addresses. The Korean students then experienced Australian home stay for one night with there friends from Buranda. The concept was a huge success. It was great to see students of the same age but from different cultures interact. Although there was a language barrier, the techniques are the same. Taekwondo originated in Korea some 2000 years ago. Our Australian students now have a bit more of an appreciation of Korean culture and how Taekwondo was developed. It is hoped that a group of students from Australia will visit Korea next year for a similar experience.

Late last month, Thomas was asked to attend a special training camp in Melbourne where the good news was announced. The AOYF will be held in early January and feature countries such as Korea, Greece, Taipei, Malaysia and of course Australia. Good luck to Thomas who will be competing in his first international event. October 02 Kytu Dang from Denmark made an unexpected visit to Queensland. For 4 weeks Kytu was conducting seminars across Australia. A friend of Michael Tan for some years, it was a last minute decision to come and look at our national championships. It was a delight to have Kytu stay at our place for a few days. During the course of the Nationals, Kytu Dang from Denmark made a special guess appearance. Kytu, the undefeated international forms champion displayed a breath taking exhibition of Chekwon. He also delighted the crowd with some highly skilled 1 step moves. Whilst in Queensland, we took Kytu bush walking at Mt Tamborine and up to Mt Cootha to look over the capital Brisbane. In return, we were honoured to have Kytu train with us.

24th Dec Last weekend, a small group of our best players went to Sydney for the Asian Selections and NSW Open. THe players fought very well with Evert doing exceptional in his first senior nationals. Unlucky Pierre, flew all the way down and had to watch what he ate to make the weighin only to have his opponent withdraw with an injury on the day. Hang in mate, your glory will come next time. To the rest of the players, we are all competitive enough to win. It is preparing yourself mentally and perfecting one extra kick that will make the difference. Good luck for 2002. Christmas Breakup's Currumbin - The weekend saw the last of the end of year xmas breakups. At currumbin, we finished off the class on Saturday with some belt wraping. All the students enjoyed the experience. After training, we went down to the local BBQ and rathered for lunch. Di Hartman present all the juniors with a xmas present for their hard training throughout the year. There was plenty of food on hand and alot of new years resolutions to get back into training. Springwood - After the last grading, the students went back to the newly (half finished) deck at Darryls. The students enjoyed a roast lamb cooked by the Hoffmans and enjoyed by all. All will be happy to hear that after another 3 days of hammering. sawing and cursing, Darryl and Michael completed the deck for xmas. Logan City - After the last session, Claudia and the Students celebrate the end of year with a small xmas party. Once again, there was more food presented than all could eat. Buranda - The juniors celebrated with their traditional after training party. THere were some great desserts made by some of the parents. Most deserved a gold medal for presentation. The seniors went to Sing Sing chinese resturant after class for a well earnt feast. Wooloowin - Wayne took the students down to the local hangout after their last session. The traditional earth and sea Pizzas were enjoyed my all who attended. Southport - The students were going to Sizzlers for an all you coud eat xmas party.
