World Championships Selections

On Sunday Byron Coleborne won the Open Heavy Wt division and will now represent Australia at the World Championships in Denmark in October. For the second successive World Championship, Byron will be the only Queensland representative on the Australian team.

This will be Byron's 3rd World Championship having represented Australia at the Jnr Worlds in Ireland 2000, and at the last World Championships in Beijing 2007. At 198 cm, is one of the tallest heavy weights and has a good chance of a medal at the World championships.

For the first time, the selection event used the Lajust electronic body protectors to score points. Even though this system was new to Byron he won all his 3 fights convincingly. His first fight was against the up and coming Chad Cross from WA. Byron won 9 - 3 with his back foot attack on target. Byron's next fight was against former National team member Adam Wright. Byron attached Adam with a push kick to the chest which forced Adam to withdraw in the first round. Byron stop his final competitior with a roundhouse kick to the face which KO the player.

Our other player Brogan Stewart-Ng won a Silver medal in the under 74kg. Brogan's only loss was against Burak Hassan, the 2008 Olympic representative.

Congratulations also to Ben Hartmann who coach our 2 athletes. Ben was originally going to compete, but had to withdraw due to a broken arm at the recent International in Malaysia.
