Bronze at the Youth
Olympics
Tamara Bingham from Currumbin won 1 or only 2 Bronze medals by a
Queenslander at the AYOF (Australian Youth Olympic Festival). The
event which is sponsored by the AOC is held every 2 years at Sydney's
Olympic park is a multi sport international event for Juniors aged 14 -
17 years. This year there were 15 sports including swimming,
gymnastics, diving, table tennis, and of course Taekwondo. In the
Taekwondo competition there were 6 countries - Australia, China, Great
Britain, NZ, Oceania and Chinese Taipei.
Tamara won selection from her success at the Nationals in Adelaide
last year. Tamara's sister Samantha was also selected, but a knee
injury sustained at the nationals has forced her to sit on the sideline
till July this year.
In the lead up to the AYOF, Tamara trained nearly everyday over
Christmas with the guys at Currumbin. Tamara lost her first fight
to Chinese Taipei but then won the repercharge to claim the Bronze
medal. At 14, Tamara was one of the youngest
competitors and had to fight girls almost 3 years older.
